Foreign Language Department

Bienvenidos! Welcome to the Foreign Language Department!

The Foreign Language Department at CCHS currently consists of five levels of Spanish courses taught by three teachers. Spanish I is taught by David Avila. Spanish II is taught by Angela Quinteros. Spanish III is taught by Alicia Caballero. Spanish IV is an AP level course and is now referred to as AP Spanish Language. Spanish V is also an AP level course and is now referred to as AP Spanish Literature. Both of these courses are taught by Alicia Caballero.

Angela Quinteros has been teaching at Central Catholic for four years now. She is also the Head of the Department. She is fluent in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish due to living, studying, and teaching abroad in Guatemala. She has a teaching credential and a Bachelors Degree from UCSB.

Alicia Caballero has been teaching at Central Catholic for four years. She is a native Spanish speaker who went on to receive her Bachelors Degree in the Spanish Language from Fresno State.

David Avila is our part time teacher. He has been working at Central as a coach and substitute teacher for several years and last year we had the pleasure of bringing him on board to teach two classes of Spanish I in the afternoons. Mr. Avila has now expanded his duties to include two more Spanish I courses. He is also currently working on his teaching credential and Bachelors Degree at Stanislaus State. Like Mrs. Caballero he is also a native Spanish speaker.

Mrs. Quinteros, Mrs. Caballero, and Mr. Avila work very hard to make Spanish fun, exciting, and interesting for the students. We are currently in the process of implementing a new method called TPRS (Teaching Proficiency Through Reading and Storytelling). This method steers away from the mundane activities from textbooks and workbooks and makes learning Spanish a hands on, interactive experience. We also utilize the TPR (Total Physical Response) method on a daily basis at the lower levels of Spanish to help the students learn vocabulary and verb usage. We are a dynamic team that pride ourselves on working well together, creativity, and most importantly enhancing the learning experience by creating a positive environment that will foster personal and spiritual growth as well as experience with a new language.

The Foreign Language Department is also responsible for coordinating International Week. International Week is in November and it is a time for us to learn about and celebrate other cultures. Students are heavily involved in both of these activities and we encourage anyone interested to participate.
